Appeals
Appellate advocacy in Colorado family law, from preserving the record at trial to briefing and argument on appeal.
Deep appellate experience
Jennifer Schaffner was first introduced to family law as a Staff Attorney at the Colorado Court of Appeals, where she specialized in analyzing and drafting opinions in family law appeals. That work gave her an inside view of how appellate courts read a record, weigh authority, and reach a decision.
As an appellate practitioner, Jennifer has achieved favorable outcomes for numerous clients in the Colorado Court of Appeals and often consults with other attorneys about their client's appellate issues.
What we do at the appellate level
We evaluate potential appeals honestly, based on the record and the applicable standard of review. Not every unfavorable order is a good candidate for appeal, and part of our job is telling you so before you invest in a filing.
When an appeal is the right path, we handle briefing and oral argument before the Colorado Court of Appeals and, where appropriate, petitions for certiorari to the Colorado Supreme Court. We also assist trial counsel with preserving issues for appeal and with post-trial motion practice.
Working with your trial team
We regularly work alongside a client's existing trial attorney, either as appellate co-counsel or as a consulting appellate resource during trial. If you are that attorney and want a second set of eyes on a family law appellate issue, we welcome the conversation.
